Meet the Waxwing Quilt

I’m pleased to bring you my latest pattern, the Waxwing quilt!

About the Design

Inspired by Waxwing birds and their distinct dark-tipped wings, the Waxwing quilt is my take on the “Doves in the Window” (and the similar “Dove in a Window”) block. Always a fan of traditional quilt blocks, Doves in the Window is another heritage block dating back to the 1930s. The same design takes on completely different looks based on a scrappy or simple construction, so you can create your ideal flock of Waxwings—did you know that technically a group of Waxwings is called a “museum” or an “earful”?

Quilt Size

Waxwing is available in two sizes, a small throw measuring 56½”x56½”, and a large throw, measuring 56½”x75”. Like the Buckeye Bloom, the Waxwing design yields a quilt that is super functional with construction that is easy to manage for those that might be newer to piecing quilts or quilting on a home machine. Both sizes work well for the couch or on a picnic, and my kids have already taken them for a little extra warmth at night now that the weather has gotten cold in Northern Virginia.

Pattern Features

If this is your first MEGMADE pattern, you’ll be pleased to find a pattern that is thoughtfully designed and easy to navigate. Whether you prefer written or illustrated instructions, construction is detailed with plenty of tips and diagrams. Piece counts and measurements are provided throughout the pattern to make sure you’re on track. And as always, margins and spacing is generous throughout the pattern for a smooth and organized sewing experience.

In the Waxwing pattern you’ll also find planning pages with space for notes, swatches, and a quilt mockup, as well as detailed charts and diagrams for each possible version of the quilt.
